Inside a 30-Printer Workshop

How we hand-finish every piece, from "print complete" to your doorstep.

← Back to the blog

Luma-Isla started in 2019 with one printer in a spare bedroom. Today we run 30+ printers out of our shop in Edmond, Oklahoma — but the number of machines was never the point. The point is what happens to a piece after the printer stops.

A print finishing is the easy part

People sometimes assume that once a 3D print finishes, the piece is done. It isn't. A freshly printed piece straight off the bed has visible layer lines, a matte plastic look, and none of the bronze, patina, or hand-painted finish you see in photos. That's all done by hand, afterward, by us.

The four stages

Every piece that leaves our shop goes through the same four stages (we walk through this in more detail on our Process page):

1. Print. The piece comes off one of our 30+ printers, in premium PETG — the same food-safe, BPA-free polymer used in medical devices and food containers.

2. Sand & prime. Layer lines get sanded down and the piece is primed so paint and finish sit evenly.

3. Finish. This is where a plain printed shape becomes a bronze-finish statue, a hand-painted mask, or a pet memorial with the right patina. It's the slowest stage, and the one that actually makes each piece look like what you saw in the listing photos.

4. Inspect & ship. Every single piece is personally inspected by someone in our family before it goes in a box. Nothing ships without that check.

Why we still do it this way

We could mass-produce. We don't, on purpose. Every piece that leaves this shop was made and finished by hand, by us, in Oklahoma — not outsourced, not drop-shipped. That's slower and it doesn't scale the way a factory would. It's also the entire reason people come back, gift these pieces to family, or trust us with a memorial for a pet they loved. We'd rather stay small and do it right.
